When it comes to insulated winter jackets, most people think of a down jacket as providing the highest level and quality insulation, but there are several reasons why down is not the ideal insulation for warm winter clothing.

On the practical side, down loses its insulating properties when it gets wet – even the moisture produced by sweat can reduce the insulating quality of down-filled clothing. And when you are spending time outdoors you need your warm winter clothing to stay warm despite the conditions!

Synthetic insulation materials are also easier to clean and last longer than down which typically loses its “fluff” after a certain period of time.

Furthermore, many people are allergic to down and other bird feathers and cannot wear down-filled jackets. For those people synthetic, hypoallergenic clothing is an absolute must.

On the ethical side, the use of down in winter jackets and other items encourages the continuation of cruel down collection practices and perpetuates cruelty toward animals.

Down is collected from geese and ducks in a variety of ways. Some down is removed from ducks and geese during slaughter, and some from birds in breeding flocks and those raised for meat and foie gras that may be plucked repeatedly while they are still alive.

Plucking causes geese and ducks considerable pain and distress as they are lifted by their necks or wings, legs physically restrained or tied, and feathers ripped out of their skin. The skin is often torn open and then quickly sewn up. Plucking may begin when the animals are just 10 weeks old and be repeated in six-week intervals until the birds are slaughtered for meat long before they would naturally die.

Despite industry claims that certain sources of down are cruelty-free, the reality is that it is impossible to tell whether the down used in the products you buy was obtained from live-plucked birds.

The down-free alternatives that exist today provide the loft, lightweight feel, and overall warmth that is traditionally associated with down with the added benefits of being cruelty-free, allergen-free and easier to clean.

For these reasons, TREQA is committed to using only 100 percent cruelty-free down alternatives in our winter jackets and pants. That’s our down-free promise to you.
